Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN) is an Islamic university founded in 1951 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
UIN’s mission is to integrate and develop Islamic Studies, science, and Indonesian identity in education and teaching, described by current Rector Prof. KH Yudian Wahyudi as ‘putting God back into the process’. With a particularly strong record in Islamic Studies, the institution’s long term goal is to provide a world-class standard of education in the subject.
UIN is the first university in Indonesia to offer a postdoctoral research program. The Sunan Kalijaga International Postdoctoral Research Program provides 15 scholarships for fellows from UIN and other Islamic institutions. During this eight month program each fellow is expected to write at least five publishable articles in Arabic or English. Introduced in 2016, the program has been a great success so far, with research subjects such as comparisons between Indonesian Islam and others forms around the world.
UIN maintains a diverse range of business positions in the interest of becoming a self-sustaining organisation. Students are employed in internal vacancies in the university’s businesses, such as the UIN-owned hotel, while institution buildings are rented to banks and other businesses. A five storey business centre is currently under construction, and UIN hopes to open its second university hospital on campus in the coming years.
Like any forward-thinking university, UIN are aware of the value of industry collaboration. The UIN Centre of Entrepreneurial Studies regularly hosts a range of industry speakers to present to students. Students are provided with a multitude of internship options in finance, community development, and the creative economy. With the growing trend for Islamic banking in Indonesia, collaboration with international banks enables UIN to give its students valuable new opportunities and training from some of the top banks in the world.
